It’s sexual. Autogynephiles are turned on by women’s discomfort and get gratification from those women having to (i.e. being forced to) validate them as women. In Thomas’s case, the pleasure is twofold. There’s the discomfort he causes by competing, and there’s the exhibitionism and voyeurism of sharing a changing room with those women. The sexual thrill of it all must be immense.

Then there’s the attention and adoration society at large showers autogynephiles with. Believe it or not, they find that validation sexually gratifying as well. Of course, they also enjoy other aspects of it, such as financially benefitting from the whole thing, but the fetish is their main driving force. Usually Blanchard’s writing gets mentioned in relation with, but “Anne” Lawrence, himself an autogynephile, also gives a pretty good insight into the kinds of things autogynephiles get off on (including some kinds of validation and inclusion that would seem innocuous to most people, but are very much sexual to the autogynephile), and how dedicated they are to constantly chasing that thrill. Once you understand the nature and force of the fetish, nothing that autogynephiles do, or that the trans movement gets up to, is surprising or confusing anymore.

Swimming is more or less incidental here, just a means of obtaining the sexual gratification and societal adulation. If Thomas cared about the sport itself, or enjoyed honest competition, he never would’ve started hormones and would’ve kept competing with other men. After all, it’s not as if he suffers from any kind of dysphoria, as is obvious from poolside photos, though only the Daily Mail published the bulge pics, so much of the public probably assumes the poor dear has had the operation.

In reality, of course, the vast majority of today’s MtFs aren’t dysphoric in the slightest. Even among the small minority of them who do go through with the penis inversion there’s a considerable number that are not dysphoric, but simply porn addicted perverts chasing that sissy hypno thrill a step too far, only to find out that propaganda about the wonders of the neovagina are a sham and the sexual gratification they once got from their fetish is largely a thing of the past.
