The Biden administration announced a slate of new actions on Thursday to support transgender and LGBTQI+ Americans in the face of what the White House called 'dangerous anti-transgender legislative attacks' in the president's latest battle with Republican-led states.

'The evidence is clear that these types of bills stigmatize and worsen the well-being and mental health of transgender kids, and they put loving and supportive families across the country at risk of discrimination and harassment,' the White House said in a fact sheet.

New measures include an effort by the Homeland Security Department to make airport screenings more gender-neutral and a host of new educational resources on gender-affirming care for kids and teens, after several Republican governors placed limits on accessing such information.

The State Department will also be rolling out an option for people to select 'X' as a gender on their passports beginning on April 11. 

To support this, the White House said in a fact sheet, the government is 'working closely with air carriers' in the US to 'promote the use and acceptance' of the 'X' passport option.

United Airlines and American Airlines already allow passengers to pick 'X' as their gender. A third airline will roll it out this fall, the White House said.

The Transportation Security Administration will overhaul 'the current, gender-based system' with 'more accurate technology' to screen travelers later this year to improve 'customer experience of transgender travelers who have previously been required to undergo additional screening due to alarms in sensitive areas.'

The TSA is also updating its guidelines to remove 'gender considerations' during airport security checkpoints. 

'Every American deserves the freedom to be themselves. But far too many transgender Americans still face systemic barriers, discrimination, and acts of violence,' the Biden administration said. 

'Today, the Administration once again condemns the proliferation of dangerous anti-transgender legislative attacks that have been introduced and passed in state legislatures around the country.'

The White House is also launching a new website with resources for LGBTQI+ children and their parents to circumvent states that 'have removed critical information about mental health resources for LGBTQI+ youth from official state websites.'

'Transgender youth often face significant barriers in accessing supportive resources, and are at greater risk of attempted suicide,' the White House said. 'These resources include best practices for affirming an LGBTQI+ child, and information about suicide prevention services.'

It comes after Texas' Health Department reportedly removed pages on suicide prevention for LGBTQI+ youth from the state's website earlier this year. 

Florida's Department of Education removed 'LGBTQ-inclusive antibullying resources' from its web pages in December, according to the Advocate. 

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' office told DailyMail.com, 'It is simply indefensible that the Biden Administration DOE has officially endorsed policy guidance that directs school staff to keep secrets about children from their parents.' 

On Thursday the White House also announced it directed The National Child Traumatic Stress Network, an office within the Health and Human Services Department (HHS), to release new information to medical providers 'confirming that providing gender-affirming care is neither child maltreatment nor malpractice.'

It's also making sure resources on gender-affirming care are getting to parents, students and teachers via a new HHS web page after Arizona announced it would ban the medical treatment for minors on Wednesday. 

Similar bills are working their way through Alabama and Texas' state governments. 

Conversations surrounding gender identity and sexual orientation, particularly in the classroom, have become a flash point for Republicans. 

Idaho's legislature passed the first sports participation ban on trans youth in 2020, though it was blocked in court.  

GOP Governors like South Dakota's Kristi Noem and Florida's DeSantis have led the charge to place limits on trans youth competing in school sports, claiming transgender women have an unfair advantage over biological females.

Fourteen states so far have bans on transgender students participating in sports consistent with their gender identity, according to the Movement Advancement Project. 

Noem signed an executive order in March 2021 restricting participation in women's school sports to those assigned female at birth. 

Last month she signed a similar bill into law, making South Dakota the first state to pass such a ban in 2022.

DeSantis has come under fire from LGBTQI+ activists and Democrats for signing into law a bill that bans teachers and other school staff in kindergarten through third grade from discussing 'sexual orientation' and 'gender identity' in the classroom.

Teachers can be sued by parents for running afoul of the new law, which critics dubbed the 'Don't Say Gay' bill. 

[Illegitimate] President Joe Biden denounced the law as 'hateful' earlier this year. It goes into effect July 1.

And on Wednesday, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey became the latest Republican governor to sign a bill limiting trans youth participation in sports in addition to the ban on gender-affirming surgery for minors. 

Biden released a statement marking the eve of Transgender Day of Visibility that same day, which also took aim at states limiting access to resources for trans youth.

'In the past year, hundreds of anti-transgender bills in States were proposed across America, most of them targeting transgender kids. The onslaught has continued this year. These bills are wrong,' the president said. 

'Efforts to criminalize supportive medical care for transgender kids, to ban transgender children from playing sports, and to outlaw discussing LGBTQI+ people in schools undermine their humanity and corrode our Nation's values.' (read more)
