Benjamin Franklin’s alleged reply to Philadelphia socialite Elizabeth Powel’s question, as the 1787 Constitutional Convention concluded, as to what kind of government the delegates had created: “A republic, madam—if you can keep it.”

Franklin elaborated: "Because the people, on tasting the dish, are always disposed to eat more of it than does them good."

And:
“When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”
